North Austin

Austin, Texas is the state capital and one of the major cities of Central Texas. It has a pretty distinctive mix of tech, live music, outdoor recreation, food, and Texas culture.

A few things Austin is especially known for:

• 🎵 Live music: Austin calls itself the “Live Music Capital of the World.” It’s home to SXSW and Austin City Limits, plus lots of smaller venues and bars with live music.
• 🌮 Food: Breakfast tacos and barbecue are huge. Food trucks are also a major part of the local food scene.
• 💻 Tech: Austin has become a significant technology hub, with companies such as Dell having deep roots in the area and many large tech companies maintaining Austin-area operations.
• 🌳 Outdoors: Despite being a major city, there are lots of outdoor options. Lady Bird Lake, the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, Barton Springs Pool, and the surrounding Hill Country are big draws.
• 🏘️ Neighborhoods: Austin varies dramatically by area. Downtown is dense and active; South Congress (SoCo) is known for shops, restaurants and entertainment; East Austin has a mix of older neighborhoods and newer development; and areas farther west tend to transition into the Hill Country.
• 🏠 Real estate: Austin experienced tremendous growth and home-price appreciation during the pandemic-era housing boom. The market subsequently cooled considerably, so the Austin of 2026 is quite different from the ultra-competitive 2020–2022 market.
• ☀️ Weather: Summers are very hot, with 100°F+ days not unusual. Winters are generally mild, although Central Texas can occasionally experience significant freezes and winter storms.
• 🚗 Getting around: Austin is fairly car-dependent, and traffic can be a major consideration. Where someone lives relative to work and their usual activities can make a substantial difference in their experience of the city.

The broader Austin metro also includes places like Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown and Buda, so when someone says “Austin,” they may be talking about a much larger area than Austin proper.
